The River Tweed has played an important role in the history of the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, from fishing to transport. Building began on the ‘Old’ bridge - pictured here - in 1611 to replace an older wooden structure. The ‘new’ bridge was built from sandstone, quarried at Tweedmouth and incorporates 15 arches. Triangular cutwaters extend up to the level of the deck to become pedestrian refuges, which still afford an excellent place to stop and enjoy the view, spot seals, dolphins and otters making their way up and down river, or to watch the traditional net-and-coble salmon fishing.
Inspiration and Values
This illustration of a view of the Old Bridge and Berwick-upon-Tweed was hand-drawn in black ink. I then added a splash of ‘silver’ colour to highlight the river, creating a bold, modern statement piece.
Sustainability is important to me and I source all of my art prints from an ethical and environmentally-responsible, UK-based company. This one has been printed on to a premium, heavy-weight paper made from sustainably-sourced eucalyptus pulp, using environmentally-friendly ink. I don’t use any plastic in my packaging and there’s always a little extra something in your order as a thank you for supporting my small business.
A percentage of my profits goes to support a number of local charities that look after our built and natural environment here in North Northumberland.
