Inspiration and Techniques
Walk along the river at Berwick-upon-Tweed when the tide is out and you will be rewarded with sightings of a huge range of waterfowl, from the elegant silhouettes of grey heron to the fast, scurrying of sandpipers. Birds that are elsewhere facing population declines thrive here in North Northumberland, including the curlew and the little egret. Berwick is also home to the second largest mute swan colony in Britain, with around 800 birds counted at peak times (although about 200 birds live here permanently).
This print features seven birds I see regularly when walking by the river, including curlew, dippers, mute swans, grey herons, common sandpipers, little egrets and eider ducks. Each bird was illustrated in ink and then bird name labels were handwritten in a loose, calligraphic style.
